But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14
Do You Have the Heart of a Hero?By Evan Nehring
You don't win wars with niceness, doctor. You win wars with guts...grenade!That's Colonel Chester Phillips in Captain America: The First Avenger, as he's tossing a dummy grenade into an unsuspecting cadre of Captain America candidates. They all run for shelter...all, but Steve Rogers. Do you remember it? Rogers jumps on the grenade and shouts for Agent Carter and others to get back.
He laid down his life in that moment. He sacrificed everything.
Is this a test?Yeah, it's a test, Mr. Rogers. You just passed it with flying red, white and blue colors.
Go back three thousand years and God was looking for a hero in Judah. He told Samuel, the prophet, to visit Jesse, a sheep herder from Bethlehem, and look over his many sons to anoint the next king of Judah. The story is stunningly similar to the Captain America episode. Samuel's eyes fell immediately on Eliab, the most physically impressive son, just like Colonel Phillips wanted to choose the strapping Gil Hodge.
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7So, how do you measure up? How do I measure up? And whose measure matters to us?
God is looking at the heart. He's looking for a pathetic grenade jumper. OK, you don't have to be pathetic, but he's looking for the heart of courage. Got the heart of a hero? God will strengthen you from there!
For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. 2 Chronicles 16:9
