2014 June: Growing a Triple-Sized Heart

Do you feel incapable of what God is calling you to do? Feed your heart! If you've stepped into relationship with Jesus, your heart and soul have divine DNA. You've got royal blood! But sons and daughters of heaven with no nourishment will shrivel and fade as surely as sons and daughters of earth.

But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14

2014 June: Growing a Triple-Sized Heart

By Evan Nehring

How's your heart today? I'm asking myself, too. I do that quite a lot.

The heart plays tricks on us. We know this, right? Jeremiah laid this out back around 600 B.C.:

The heart is deceitful above all things
and beyond cure.
Who can understand it?
“I the Lord search the heart
and examine the mind,
to reward each person according to their conduct,
according to what their deeds deserve.” (Jeremiah 17:9-10)

When our hearts lie to us, they're small and shriveled. Like the Grinch before Cindy Loo Who got ahold of him.

Back to my 2014 inspiration with the Secretariat story: the autopsy of the greatest racehorse ever showed his heart was an estimated 2 3/4 times bigger than a normal thoroughbred heart. 22 pounds. It was genetic, back to the 1700's as this great Wikipedia article reveals. But there's more...

He fed his heart. Secretariat ate...well...like a horse. He ate more than a pregnant mare, or was it two pregnant mares? He ate more buckets of feed than any other horse at the track. And when he had a tooth abscess and couldn't eat, he couldn't run the same. He lost. His heart and soul were diminished.

Feed your heart! Dig into the blessing and life of the Bible! Rest and restore in the holy presence of God. Pray. Meditate. Fill your soul with the vitality of eternity.

Saint Patrick of Ireland did it like this:

I arise today
Through the strength of heaven;
Light of the sun,
Splendor of fire,
Speed of lightning,
Swiftness of the wind,
Depth of the sea,
Stability of the earth,
Firmness of the rock.

I arise today
Through God's strength to pilot me;
God's might to uphold me,
God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
God's hand to guard me,
God's way to lie before me,
God's shield to protect me,
God's hosts to save me
Afar and anear,
Alone or in a mulitude.

Christ shield me today
Against wounding
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down,
Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in the eye that sees me,
Christ in the ear that hears me.

I arise today
Through the mighty strength
Of the Lord of creation.

Here are my June personal goal updates:

1. Personal Energy

It's been all Big Red all the time! I'm thanking God for a very strong month physically with plenty of energy. This has been a good focus. It's likely to be a lifetime focus. God, give me the daily passion to pursue life!

As for my Ideal Protein weight loss plan: today is 13 weeks on the nose since April 3 and I'm at 67 pounds lost. Only 5 pounds to my original 72-pound goal, but I'm adding 11. And Week 13 was another 4-pound week! I'll likely be all the way done by early to mid-August. Lots of loose clothes! My skinny goal clothes are way too big on me now. New wardrobe starts in August.

Goal for July: faithfully record daily energy, focus on Ideal Protein program, fire up every day! (Still sticking with this one.)

2. Road Trip Road Trip

72 days now until the book launch party and the Road Trip Road Trip. It's going to be a gruelling summer! I have huge work responsibilities with hospital software implementations. The book project is in full gear.

Have you heard that pre-orders are available? ;-) Yep, just click here.

Quote permissions are coming back now from other publishers and authors for my excerpted material. The book has a ton of great quotes. Endorsements are coming in for front matter and back cover. Author photo shoot is complete with Mary Anne Pfitzinger. Illustrations are looking fabulous and coming along on pace with Chris Comport, my amazing sketch artist friend. Book tour details just beginning to come together. Much, much more going on behind the scenes.

Makes me think about the Belmont Stakes lead up with Secretariat. Train hard. Stoke the fire. You never know what could happen!

Goals for July:
  • Stay healthy and pursue the book launch project plan.

3. House

My front lawn is really looking nice, filling in from last year's roof project trampling. I love a good lawn! The stone patio is coming along...stone by stone. Colleen and I are excited about having coffee out there later this summer.

Goals for July:
  • Targeting the July 12 weekend for possibly completing installation of the stone patio.

Blog Goodness - Poverty, Core Values

Issues of compassion and truth continue to hit the headlines and the nightly news. I'm more convinced than ever that godliness has a role of significant influence in the public square. More posts to come.

Comments are always welcome!

We're on the down slope for 2014. Can you believe it? How can you commit today to making the most of the time that's left?
