2014 April: A Season for Family

Life is good when family's together. This has been a family stretch. Florida at the end of March. (Yes!) Canada last week. It's been so wonderful to connect with family. Life is rich when you're with the ones you love.

But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14

2014 April: A Season for Family

By Evan Nehring

The Secretariat story is filled with family drama. Dying parents. Legal fights over the inheritance. A rebellious child. I could go on, but the movie portrays this wonderful moment where the family begins to realize the special nature of what this horse can accomplish.

The Tweedy family (owners) are all assembled in their Denver living room watching mom and Secretariat on TV, popcorn at the ready. They gather close as the broadcast of the 1973 Preakness Stakes begins.

Of course, Big Red (Secretariat's real name) sinks to the back of the pack early, as he always did. Then, as the tension mounts, Red makes his move. The family cautiously cheers. Dad and kids get more excited as the pack rounds the back corner. Then, the final surge and popcorn flies in the living room as Secretariat glides across the finish line, taking the another championship on the way to the triple crown.

Life is good when family's together.

This has been a family stretch. Florida at the end of March. (Yes!) Canada last week. It's been so wonderful to connect with family. Life is rich when you're with the ones you love. And all of that is more than fully worthwhile on its own, but there's an added benefit. I feel so recharged I'm waking up two hours before my alarm, pumped and ready to go! And that energy feeds into all I do, so I'm ready to support my family and to reconnect again.

Here's the April version of my goal updates for 2014. 8 months to go.

1. Personal Energy

This has been another great month running for the prize! My seven non-Secretariat days in April were all related to the Ideal Protein weight loss plan I'm on. Day 1 was April 3, so this morning marked four weeks...and 29 pounds lost! My seven non-Red days were still Mr. Ed days, not Eeyore. They were still productive, just not rockin', runnin', racin' productive. Yep, good month.

Goal for April: faithfully record daily energy, focus on Ideal Protein program, fire up every day!

2. Road Trip Road Trip

Well, I've done it now. Michael, my publisher's marketing guy, really encouraged me this week with the whole Road Trip book launch tour. So, I'm marking it in. I've asked off from work. I'm planning to do it.

Here's the itinerary:

  • Fri, Sept - Wausau, WI - Book Launch Party
  • Sat, Sept 13 - Racine, Milwaukee, Madison, WI
  • Sun, Sept 14 - Stevens Point, Tomahawk, WI
  • Mon, Sept 15 - Minneapolis, MN
  • Tue, Sept 16 - St. Cloud, Alexandria, Fergus Falls, MN
  • Wed, Sept 17 - Fargo, Grand Forks, ND
  • Thu, Sept 18 - Morden, Ninette/Killarney, Brandon, Manitoba
  • Fri, Sept 19 - Winnipeg, Manitoba
  • Sat, Sept 20 - Winnipeg, MB and Kenora, Ontario
  • Sun, Sept 21 - Drive home to Wausau

Every city will have events with college groups, youth groups, churches, book stores and radio stations. Lots of online pictures, video and updates. It'll be a whirlwind tour. Do you see your city on the list? Let me know if you have connections with an 18-to-20-something group. I'll need a sponsor for each city.

Also, I'll be doing a 5-week Road Trip series with our young adult group at the Northwoods Vineyard Church in Tomahawk starting May 15. Sweet!

Goals for May:
  • Continue editing project and get the manuscript back to the publisher ASAP
  • Continue work with illustrator
  • Work on spring/summer speaking engagements
  • Work on publisher's author launch kit/my speaking press kit

3. House

Goal for May remains the same:
  • Install the tile work for Jason's bedroom desktop. It's going to happen!
