2014 February: The Faith to Invest

2014 February: The Faith to Invest
There's a belief that says, I know the value of my faith and I will not undervalue it for convenience or reputation. This is not about a gamble. It's about being certain before the rest of the world is certain. Sometimes it's about putting your money where your mouth is.

But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14

2014 February: The Faith to Invest

By Evan Nehring

Back to the Secretariat story as my inspiration for 2014...

Secretariat's owner, Penny Tweedy, hit a massive financial obstacle when her father passed away. The estate taxes (death taxes) were about 6 million dollars. (We won't even get into the ethics of taking a family's inheritance on the passing of the father or mother.) Secretariat had won horse of the year for his two-year-old season and was poised to take a run at the triple crown as a three-year-old. The only obvious way to save the stables was to sell their champion stallion.

Penny refused. She even turned down an offer for 8 million dollars, believing her big red horse could win it all. Her belief in Secretariat was so steadfast the she held out for the financing deal that would allow them to race, but bury them if they lost. That faith, that passionate belief, makes my heart burn.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1, NKJV

There's a belief that says, I know the value of my faith and I will not undervalue it for convenience or reputation. This is not about a gamble. It's about being certain before the rest of the world is certain. Sometimes it's about putting your money where your mouth is.

I reached that point with my book project this week. I'll be signing with a publisher this week. I am taking financial responsibility for a God-given dream. It's not a 6 million dollar deal. There are no guarantees of anything, but it's my time to lay may efforts and gifts on the table. I will not undervalue this project.

I'll do a special post once things are official. Meanwhile, here's the February version of my goal updates for 2014. 10 months to go.

1. Personal Energy

The year continues to rock with high energy! My four non-Secretariat days this month break down like this:

  • Two sick days
  • One headache day
  • One "work was a disaster" day (Been there?)

I've wrestled with how to label the down days. Even Secretariat had resting and healing days, right? I've decided to call them for what they are and keep pressing for the prize.

2014 February: The Faith to Invest

Goal for March: faithfully record daily energy, even through vacation, minimize down days

2. Road Trip Road Trip

The major steps forward for February include engaging an illustrator, completing the multimedia presentations (they're cool!), significant work on my speaking press kit, and, not least, reaching a publishing agreement. There were a few other steps forward in setting up the business side for writing, speaking, blogging. 2014 is blessed, alive, moving!

Goals for March:
  • Complete my speaking press kit
  • Complete second draft read through, prepared to hand off to editing team
  • Continue work with illustrator
  • Finalize spring speaking engagements
  • Complete publisher's author launch kit
That's most of it...whew! Prayer support is appreciated! I choose to take each step in the Father's presence and blessing.

3. House

Well, delays here. Jason's tile desktop is not done. Perhaps in March?

Goal for March:
  • Install the tile work for Jason's bedroom desktop. I've got all the supplies but I may need to learn a bit about this as I go. Excited to get this done!

Blog Goodness - Poverty, Core Values

I worshiped this weekend with an amazing group of men. I'm certain many had very different political views from mine. The Father continues to call me to stand up for truth with a heart of blessing, not cursing.

Comments are always welcome!

    1. Thanks Adriel! Your celebrating with me means more than you know. Like Bilbo in the Hobbit, "I'm going on an adventure!" Hopefully no large dragons but I'll take God's presence over Gandalf any day of the week.

  2. great post brother. I love your comments on faith as I was pondering Hebrews 11 yesterday myself. Daily energy analysis is awesome too. I should do that as this week I've found it difficult to find energy to do what I need to. I think emotional energy is the challenge. I heard John Maxwell say yesterday that "energy comes from passion." "If we are passionate about where we are going and what we are doing the energy will be there." Of course we do need to just rest sometimes and recoup. Right?!

    1. Michael, I love the John Maxwell quote! I agree. Vision gives us a pressure from inside that stands against the outside pressures...puts a spring in our step. Yes, the resting is important, but with a purpose, I think. Leisure that gives us strength to press on in our journey is different from dinging around on every side street and losing the vision altogether. I've gotten better at that over the years. Sometimes I need a reminder to just hang out with family and friends...
