Seven Core Values and the Career Choice

By Evan Nehring

If your career should resonate with who you are, building your character and knowing your values is a distinct advantage. Our road trip has us on the right path already. Character and values are at the core of the Jesus follower. So, do these seven core values relate to our career search? You better believe it!

Worship – As you worship the Creator of the universe, He will spark interest, meaning and direction in you. You become more awake and alive and…you! Enthusiasm will serve you in any career path. The word enthusiasm could be translated from the Greek as “having God within.” The passion of worship can translate to career success!

Devotion – Pursuing the heart of God in the Word and prayer helps you hear his voice, as the sheep hear the voice of the shepherd. Divine guidance anyone?

Family & Friends – Well, do relational connections count in launching into a career path? Um, yes. Some say it’s not what you know but who you know. There’s much truth there. Whether it’s an uncle who gives you a shot with his financial group or a sister giving you constant encouragement, relationships matter.

Outreach – Every career field is a mission field. Opportunity is everywhere to authentically let God’s love and forgiveness flow out of you. Coworker connections are powerful things. Your career choice might even flow out of this value of outreach.

Character – Your future employer will feel the spirit of your character as she shakes your hand and looks you in the eye. The confidence of a Jesus follower committed to character is evident. It’s attractive. It’s an ultra-professionalism the HR department can’t even explain.

Personal Management – Your reliability through the responsible handling of your personal resources: that’s very attractive as well. With finances and health in order, time managed, and possessions cared for, your dependability will be solid. You’ll be a rock.

Kingdom Story – When you can tie your day-to-day job to the eternal purposes of God, forget about it! That passion will drive skill development and solid workplace relationships.
