2014 Week 2: Destined to Run

Mare and sire were Something Royal and Bold Ruler. There's an air of destiny there, don't you think? Secretariat, as the foal came to be known, could be defined as an international servant leader. Am I saying the whole story serves as a bit of a parable? Yes I am.

But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14

2014 Week 2: Destined to Run

By Evan Nehring

Do you give the horse its strength
or clothe its neck with a flowing mane?
Job 39:19

There's a scene from the Secretariat movie where owner Penny and her son fly to the ranch to see the horse be born. Mare and sire were Something Royal and Bold Ruler. There's an air of destiny there, don't you think? Secretariat, as the foal came to be known, could be defined as an international servant leader. Am I saying the whole story serves as a bit of a parable? Yes I am.

So trainer, groomer, owner and son look on as the colt is born. And then something remarkable happens. He stands up. Lucien, the trainer, asks the groomer,

Have you EVER seen that before?
Nope, not me!

From his very birth, Big Red (his real name), was destined to run.

There are many days when we don't feel special, right? We don't wake up every morning with a sense of destiny and wild adventure. And we aren't all destined for fame and fortune. But I feel that God-given specialness, that destiny, like I was born for great purpose. I think you should too. Our infinite Creator planted unique gifts into every one of us and our Redeemer can overrule what's been marred.

Here's the week 2 version of my goal updates for 2014. Fifty two weeks to go.

1. Personal Energy

My tracking for personal energy has gone very well. I just jot "Red, Ed, Eeyore" in my daily planner margin and circle one at the end of the day. My tally is what I predicted: 10-3-1. I can live with that ratio, but I'd like to push for better. This is a daily tally of my motion and engagement with health, nutrition, productivity, relationships...everything.

Goal for 2 weeks: faithfully record daily energy, hoping for a 11-2-1 score.

2. Road Trip Road Trip

These presentations I'm working on are so cool. Didn't finish the three I'd hoped. I got one and a half. That's complete presentation script, polished PowerPoint and video clip. I'm excited about the future impact. Each of these presentations covers one of the five sections of the book.

I got through the entire manuscript and pulled the writing plan notes into an outside document. That helps clean up the manuscript for sure. Still need to segment those into my task list. I haven't exactly started second draft edits, but the presentation work forces engagement with the manuscript. I've been feeding edits back into the main text as well as grabbing some major shifts in emotional tone.

Goals for 2 weeks:

  • Finish 1.5 speaking presentations for the Learning, Labor sections (notes and PowerPoint)
  • Move collected notes for writing plan into task system
  • Begin second draft read through, making quick corrections and task notes

3. House

Well, I worked on the basement window pane and painfully couldn't cut a picture frame glass to fit. I guess I didn't watch closely enough in my days back at Keystone Glass. (More than two decades!) I've got the window insulated and waiting for my dad. :-)

Upstairs reading room is all set up and looks great! I've got a puzzle table out that I've been putzing with a bit.

Goals for 2 weeks:
  • Upload another chunk of family videos to YouTube private channels for backup. This actually pretty cool 'cause we can log in anywhere and stream our home videos. Just gettin' started...

Blog Goodness - Poverty, Core Values

I'm really pleased with the first poverty posts on income inequality. I'm going to stay on that theme for a while. Core values checkup to come end of the month.

I feel like it's a Red day today. Hope it is for you too!
