2014: Like Secretariat at the Belmont

2014: Like Secretariat at the Belmont
I choose to wake up every day and run the race for which I've been created, to which I've been called. I don't compete against humanity. I fight against darkness and mediocrity without and within. Like Secretariat at the Belmont, I run.

But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14
Carpe Diem: Seize the Day!

2014: Like Secretariat at the Belmont

By Evan Nehring

Do you give the horse its strength
or clothe its neck with a flowing mane?
Do you make it leap like a locust,
striking terror with its proud snorting?
It paws fiercely, rejoicing in its strength,
   and charges into the fray.
It laughs at fear, afraid of nothing;
it does not shy away from the sword.
The quiver rattles against its side,
along with the flashing spear and lance.
In frenzied excitement it eats up the ground;
it cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds.
Job 39-19:24

I choose to wake up every day and run the race for which I've been created, to which I've been called. I don't compete against humanity. I fight against darkness and mediocrity without and within. Like Secretariat at the Belmont, I run.

Here's the week 0 version of my goal updates for 2014. Fifty two weeks to go.

1. Personal Energy

I'm taking a new angle on health and personal growth this year. It will tackle all of physical, mental and spiritual health at once by measuring my personal energy. I'm going to race against myself! Every evening I'm going to determine whether the day was Secretariat (high energy), Mr. Ed (medium energy), or Eeyore (low energy). The goal will be to improve through the year. Here's the blank slate. Kinda cool, eh?

Goal for 2 weeks: faithfully record daily energy, hoping for a 10-3-1 score. Starts today!

2. Road Trip Road Trip

With my Road Trip book having first draft complete, it's time to move through the projects that will get me to publishing. This is complicated, but I'm shooting for an August publishing date and a September book launch tour. The book launch party would be Friday night, September 12 in Wausau. Then I'd take off work the following week and travel Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota and Manitoba.

The idea would be to connect with church groups, college groups, book stores, radio stations, and of course family and friends along the way. It'd be a whirlwind pace! So this goal spot will keep you in the loop on the progress of the book launch tour.

Goals for 2 weeks:

  • Create three speaking presentations for the Love, Learning, Labor sections (notes and PowerPoint)
  • Review collected notes for writing plan, move into task system
  • Begin second draft read through, making quick corrections and task notes

3. House

That's one goal spot for me personally. One for my writing aspirations. And now one for our home. This is keeping it down to earth and real.

Goals for 2 weeks:

  • Fix the basement window pane
  • Arrange the upstairs reading room

Blog Goodness - Poverty, Core Values

I plan to add a couple of features to my thrice weekly blog posts this year. The main addition will be an ongoing look at poverty. As I've engaged in politics, the church and the community, I see massive lack of understanding of poverty, what it means, and what we can do about it. What is true compassion? Should this be the starting point for a Jesus follower stepping into civic involvement?

I'm also planning a monthly core values checkup. I've done this sporadically but it's such a great heart check.

2013 worked. It wasn't perfect but it worked. Setting goals and following through works. Not just new year's resolutions, mind you, but a lifelong commitment to living with purpose. Remember Proverbs 16:9?
In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.
God, every bit of this year is yours!
