2013 Week 50: A Year of Purpose

2013 Week 50: A Year of Purpose
I've never had a year where I've been more connected with my life goals. I have no regrets for this year. I've lived so intentionally that I don't think I can be more intentional. I've embraced life purpose in a new way this year. I haven't gotten everything I wanted, but I've never lost sight of what I wanted. I haven't stopped pursuing my best understanding of the Father's design for me.

But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14

2013 Week 50: A Year of Purpose

By Evan Nehring

Well, this is it. The next time I post, the year will be over. I'm home with Jason today. He's sick. Wish I could take it for him. It's a bit quiet, though, and I like that. The tree is lit. The Christmas village is laid out on the piano. It's almost that time to relax and reflect with family, and review.

I'm a little numb. It feels like the push at the end of the school term. I like that feeling because it means I've pursued something worthwhile. Do you know that feeling? When you stagger across the finish line exhausted and spent? Athletes embrace that feeling in pursuit of championships. Artists embrace that feeling in pursuit of the masterpiece. Families embrace that feeling in pursuit of home.

One year will give way to the next. There will be new pursuits. Have you found mission and purpose? Have you found something worth pursuing? Have you grasped the eternal forgiveness and design that gives you the joy to go on?

Here's the week 50 version of my goal updates for 2013. Just two weeks to go.

1. Have 12 monthly date nights with Colleen.

Well, we finish our work this week. We party a bit this weekend. Then we're home next week. I'm not sure if our December date will be alone or lots of family and friend time. We'll see. We'll be watching for the opportunity to slip away.

2. Lose 37 pounds.

OK, three weeks since last check in and I got one more pound. Thirty three for the year. I'm not sure if I can pull this off for the full 37. Frustrating but it's been a fantastic year! I'll see if I can get a little more...then reload...

3. House projects: Finish Organizing Upstairs Office

OK, wow, this is done! All the audio equipment pieces sold on eBay! I'm pretty happy with the prices I got and thrilled to have this project knocked out. This is part of a broader plan to convert my recording equipment into a digital studio.

4. Meet my Road Trip writing deadlines for 2013.

This has been an exciting three weeks for writing. Two more chapters down and two to go (plus the conclusion). The conversations of the Road Trip are real. I have no intention for it to be all about me, but I'm willing to throw my story out there so we can have a real discussion about the big decisions of young adulthood. Bridging the gap by finishing the first draft will be a massive relief and a launchpad for next year's writing and publishing plans.

Here are my due dates for the final two weeks:
  • December 19 for The Making of a Leader (have changed this chapter title many times)
  • December 26 for Core Value 7: Kingdom Story - My Place in This World
  • December 29 for the Conclusion
This leadership chapter is very personal. It's more reading and reflection than writing at the moment. I'll be flipping modes soon!

So that's it. Writing, a date, and being healthy: that's what's left for the last two weeks of 2013. When we hit the new year, celebration and regrouping for 2014.

But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14
