2013 Week 47: Here Come the Holidays!

2013 Week 47: Here Come the Holidays!
So how do we stay in balance? We've got five weeks left in 2013 and I've got some big goals to tie together. It's not relaxing time yet! On the other hand, how many holiday specials have the grouchy antagonist who still needs to learn that life is so much more than cell phones, board meetings and the next big deal?

Part of the answer is knowing very clearly what's important to you.

But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14

2013 Week 47: Here Come the Holidays!

By Evan Nehring

It's an interesting juxtaposition: personal goals and the holidays. It's ambition vs. lounging, work vs. rest, projects vs. pastimes. Not many of us can take six weeks off from our plans and arrive at success. And if you think about it, the last of the year is only one of many holiday seasons through the year. For some, it might not even be the biggest. Summer vacation, spring break, and all of the holiday weekends through the year: they're all special times with family and friends.

Last December, I spent many hours laying out long-term life objectives. I thought and prayed about life in three to five years. I attended an imagined version of my own funeral and recorded what I hoped people would say.

So all of the ambition of the year's projects is not just about accomplishment. It's not just about doing, it's about being...and becoming. I've got all of these thoughts loaded into my Evernote app and I have another app that can read them to me as I drive to and from work. Just here and there, not often.

My 2013 goals are not a diversion from what's truly important. They're part of it. The laughter and smiles of family and friends, they're part of it. These are the people that accept me while I'm in process. They celebrate the victories with me and stay true when it's tougher. A year of deep focus on becoming who I was meant to be means I will be more present and content as we toast to life and give thanks to our Creator for unfathomable blessing.

Here's the week 47 version of my goal updates for 2013. Just five weeks to go.

1. Have 12 monthly date nights with Colleen.

December is coming. It's been a good year. One month to go...

2. Lose 37 pounds.

Two weeks since our last check-in, two more pounds lost. I'm down 32 and very determined to get the last five. Yes, I've successfully been walking 10,000 steps per day. We had dinner with an old friend who told me I looked thinner. That's always awesome.

The plan: keep walking 10,000 steps/day and focusing on very low flex points.

3. House projects: Finish Organizing Upstairs Office

I'm so relieved to say that all the equipment is listed on eBay! Next time we talk it'll be gone. I'm quite sure of it because I started all four pieces at $10 each. One bid is in and next Sunday evening will be the closing of the four auctions. Pray for strong bidding as that money will be turned around into a more digitized studio for future composing and broadcasting efforts.

4. Meet my Road Trip writing deadlines for 2013.

I'm caught up!!! I've fought for weeks to make up time. Now I'm on track to finish first draft by New Year's Day. It's still going to be very challenging to write the final chapters quickly during this busy month. I'm very excited to move into all of the other activities dealing with editing, revision, illustrating, cover art, publishing, PR, and mostly getting out and connecting with the 18-to-20-somethings for whom the book is being written.

I've done some shuffling of chapters. Here are my final due dates:
  • December 5 for The Church Search Matrix
  • December 12 for Leaders of 10's, 50's, 100's, 1000's
  • December 19 for The ABC's of Discipleship
  • December 26 for Core Value 7: Kingdom Story - My Place in This World
Chapter a week...yeah, it's intense. My brain is immersed in this and each chapter is a whole new experience. There's a whole lot of destiny in these final chapters. But one of the things I'm looking forward to is stepping back in the new year and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide me in drawing out the continuous thread of this story.
