2013 Week 33: The Last of Summer

2013 Week 33: The Last of Summer
The change of seasons is always nostalgic for me. I can't believe how true it is that time moves faster as you age. I've always believed in living life with purpose, but that conviction carries even more urgency as seasons change and years slip by...as decades slip by. We don't control everything but we control what we control.

But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14

2013 Week 33: The Last of Summer

By Evan Nehring

It's hot. We're forecast for 90 degrees today and tomorrow. Most I talk to agree: we don't mind the heat since it means summer is still with us a bit longer. When I check in two weeks from now, school will be in session. It'll be September.

The change of seasons is always nostalgic for me. I can't believe how true it is that time moves faster as you age. I've always believed in living life with purpose, but that conviction carries even more urgency as seasons change and years slip by...as decades slip by. We don't control everything but we control what we control. Like the parable of the talents, we will answer to the Master for what we did with what we had.

This season has much more nostalgia for me as I prepare for my parents' 50th anniversary gathering. The time has flown. The days are precious.

We can still stay flexible and live in the moment, but knowing where we're going will help us arrive at our chosen destination without regret.
In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps. (Proverbs 16:9)

Here's the week 33 version of my goal updates for 2013.

1. Have 12 monthly date nights with Colleen.

It looks like our August date will be a travel date. Every year, often twice, we head north to be with our Canadian family. This year it'll be over Labor Day weekend for my parents' 50th anniversary. As for nostalgia, traveling this corridor from Wisconsin to Manitoba is liking reliving my life every time. The seasons of my life are milestones on this highway. So glad to be living it with Col.

In addition, late-August-early-September marks the anniversary of our missions trip to Brussels, Belgium. That's where our friendship began...ish. It's important to me to finish 2013 with all of our monthly dates.

2. Lose 37 pounds.

Alright, I'm back on the weigh scale. I had gained a little but then I dropped a little. I'm at 23 pounds down for the year and VERY determined to hit 37 by Christmas. I'm completely dialed in with my WeightWatchers points again and it feels good to be moving in the right direction. My left knee and leg feel pretty good from the roofing wear-and-tear injury. Col and I are running a 5K this weekend in Wausau. My training strategy has been DO NOT EXERCISE! I know, weird. Just trying to let all the stiffness and tightness release. Stretching only.

My "Christmas list" is still very motivational to me--meeting a bunch of goals and feeling good by the end of the year. The weight loss and the 50th are the two big things left. Determined!

3. House projects: Finish Organizing Upstairs Office

Yeah, nothing on this since last time. It's got to sit until after the 50th. When we get back: Get it priced and get it listed on eBay.

4. Meet my Road Trip writing deadlines for 2013.

The writing hasn't exactly followed plan this period, but it's progressing. I've completed two section intros. (How did I forget the intro to section three?) I've also been reviewing the critical worldview chapter with a friend, really scrutinizing the direction with that. Oh, and the intro to the Labor section (How Will I Make a Living?) came together in a very exciting way. I believe I have something very valuable to contribute to the career conversation for our young adults. I'm still pushing to have first draft done by Christmas. Got some time to make up.

5. 50th Anniversary Preparation

Only 12 days until the celebration. I have a pile of pictures ripped off DVD's from my Dad, to include in the slideshow. Also a couple of surprises that I can't share 'til next time. It's hard to describe how meaningful this day is to me. It will be on the last Sunday at family camp, right out at the dining hall at Manhattan Beach. Talk about nostalgia! What a celebration it's going to be!

Seasons are moving on and 2013 has been a year lived on purpose!
