2013 Week 8: Spring is Coming!

imageSpring is coming. It's not here yet, but water is melting and running down the hillside. Life is new. Looks like God's doing his part. How about you and me?

For me, it's about constantly embracing who God is calling me to be. He's not done with me yet. So I tackle the goals he's placed in my heart.

But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14

2013 Week 8: Spring is Coming!

By Evan Nehring

Can you think of anything better to do this week than change your life?

Well...

               ...I'm waiting.

Spring is coming. It's not here yet, but water is melting and running down the hillside. Life is new. Looks like God's doing his part. How about you and me?

For me, it's about constantly embracing who God is calling me to be. He's not done with me yet. So I tackle the goals he's placed in my heart. Like my Carpe Diem banner says:
But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14

If you're waiting for God to do something, maybe he's waiting for you...

Here's the week 8 version of my weekly goal updates for 2013.

1. Have 12 monthly date nights with Colleen.

This goal is so fun to tackle. It's been a stressful 2013, but these little windows have been welcome calm.
  • January - movie "The Hobbitt" and old houses drive-by's
  • February - Valentine's dinner at Applebee's, ice sculptures downtown on the square
I have a message out to try to line up a sitter for a March Saturday night. This is one of the times I wished we lived closer to family...

2. Lose 37 pounds by May 6.

I got another pound this week! I'm down 17, which is great, but I'm now 3 pounds behind pace for the May 6 goal. What SUPER PUMPS ME UP though: Jason is down 21 pounds! He's so inspiring to me. So committed. Even when the scale wasn't kind to him for a few weeks, he stuck with it. Colleen and I are blown away.

I'm not quittin' either! My goal pace stays at 2 pounds/week.

3. House projects: TurboTax

I found a great deal on TurboTax at Sam's Club: $40 with the state forms included! That's when the drama started. I pop it in the laptop drive...nothing. I call Sam's Club to ask if they know of any issues. Well, they had some warped discs in the last shipment and would be happy to replace it. I run across town and back and...

...nothing! Same problem! So I Googled the problem and found that there have been some recent windows updates to accommodate .NET programming problems with TurboTax. Fifteen minutes later, Windows updates were completed and TurboTax pops right up. Nice!

I got a good start. The goal is to finish and submit taxes by next Tuesday. We're counting on the refund from all my fall overtime to help us with the roof! (See goal #5.)

4. Meet my Road Trip writing deadlines for 2013.

With all of my platform building and publishing preparation, this week was a real return to writing. It's never as much as I'd like, but I've got some daily rhythm going again. The Kids Change Everything chapter is on track for completion next Tuesday.

The larger writing goal, again,  is to finish section three by June 5. That will include seven chapters, and that gives me about two weeks per chapter.

5. Complete the new roof project.

This week's goal is complete: doing some online shopping to set a baseline for pricing at Menards. I actually found a nice sale on architectural shingles at Menards through Sunday and I'm very excited about how great they look. Our house is very cottage-like, and the new roof will really add to the coziness.

My next step with this goal is to shop in the store. I'm going to take my price list to Menards by Saturday. Highest priority will be nailing down the shingle purchase decision, but I also want to get the rest of the list priced out.Sometimes we are genuinely stuck, and we can call out to God for help with that. But sometimes we just need to grab some godly ambition and go!
