Dating Michelle - The Setup

Dating Michelle - The SetupIn some ways, who we end up with shapes us. But there’s something in our spirits that senses the future, how our destinies will be shaped in relationships. It’s a spiritual thing. I’d like to think that the Holy Spirit enlivens that awareness in us as well. If Michelle wasn’t so much into me, I can trust that the Holy Spirit residing in her guided her another way. How great is that?!

Five great questions of life: Life * Love * Learning * Labor * Leadership

Love: Who Will I Spend My Life With?

Dating Michelle - The Setup

By Evan Nehring

Oshkosh. The name just has a bit of swagger to it, don’t you think? It has a “we’re all that” kind of a feel. I always liked Oshkosh. I have friends who were youth pastors there. They set up a couple of double dates with them, me, and one of his youth leaders named, fakely, Michelle.

The first get together was at my Porter Place apartment. Did I mention what a great place it was? It had a fireplace and a cozy, stylish layout. This was a hot day, though. I remember us all in shorts and sweating as I prepared Italian. My friends had a baby along, so we got some pictures of everyone bouncing the little one on their knee.

I showed off my 27” RCA TV and 220 watt stereo with surround sound audio. We cranked up the opening scene from the movie “Always” where the fire plane scoops up water and barely clears two fisherman in a boat before soaring overhead and out of view. The surround sound zoomed past us with 1990’s realism.

Road Trip to Oshkosh

I went over to Michelle’s place in Oshkosh one time, too. We got lunch and then stopped by her pad. Another guy stopped by, another youth leader or something. They laughed a lot. I’m sure Michelle was amazing, but there was always this feeling that we were being set up. If we had eHarmony.com profiles, they probably would have lined up pretty well, but there was no chemistry.

I’m sure we would have had an amazing ministry together. Some youth group would be busting at the seams with kids flipping out over hanging out with Evan and Michelle. I’m pretty sure I was more into our friendship than she was. She was more crazy fun and I was the contemplative.
