Dating Martha - Spontaneous or Stable?

By Taxiarchos228 (Own work) [FAL], via Wikimedia Commons
The first time Martha appeared in my love life, it was like the Bachelorette. Another eligible bachelor and I were in pursuit.  George was the spontaneous one and I was the stable one. He had the motorcycle, the leather, and a couple of years being sweet with her. I had a great GPA and…well, I was stable.

Dating Martha - Spontaneous or Stable?

By Evan Nehring

The first time Martha appeared in my love life, it was like the Bachelorette. Another eligible bachelor and I were in pursuit. George was the spontaneous one and I was the stable one. He had the motorcycle, the leather, and a couple of years being sweet with her. I had a great GPA and…well, I was stable.

It was my senior year and I was on the rebound from my breakup with Laura. Martha’s roomie was a friend of mine and, conveniently, a fan of Martha’s prospects with me. We had some fun times around downtown Minneapolis, Martha and I.

Then one night I had to bare my soul to her about how hard it was for me still, letting Laura go. Her roomie told me later that I had played it perfectly and Martha was digging the “this is how deeply I care” routine. It wasn’t a routine for me.

I left for Europe as bass player with the Concert Chorale. Martha was still in the throes of decision, but my heart was all in. I wrote a poem to her in Mozart’s childhood hometown, Salzburg, Austria. I sat on a bench looking across the Salzach River toward the city.

Martha,

What is happening in your heart?
Countless waving branches,
Fathomless oscillating breakers,
Limitless meandering clouds separate your thoughts from mine.
But you remain in my thoughts, and my heart!

Like the branches, the breakers, and the clouds,
Will your affections also wave, oscillate, and meander forever?

Only God can give me peace as the ultimate romance stirs passionately deep within my heart, and His.
He is here with me,
and there with you.
And this eternal love guides and guards
our hearts’ most genuine affections.

I’m thinking of you.

Evan

She chose George. Disappointed, I packed my things and headed for my ministry internship in Stevens Point.
