Dating Jacqueline - Home Town Possibilities?
By Evan Nehring
When Jacqueline showed up at North Central, I’ll be honest, I hardly noticed. Some people thought that because she was at Bible College…and from my home town…in Canada, well, do the math. It has to be the right time and place, though, you know?
Well, the time and place finally turned right for me. It wasn’t actually at the college in Minneapolis but back home in Brandon, Manitoba. I was working at my uncle’s glass company and traveling weekends to the camp where my parents lived in Ninette. I was home for just a month.
Jackie was a jock and a sun worshiper. She played college sports and was famously disciplined in working on her tan. We hung out a bit after youth group one Friday night. I was one of the youth leaders through the summer and she was the college girl with the cameo appearances. We had a long chat outside at her house. There was a connection. Maybe there was something here after all!
I rode out to camp late that night. Clouds danced in the moonlight as I sped south on Highway 10. Maybe all those people doing the math about Jackie and Evan were onto something and I was late to the scene.
That’s all I remember. I don’t remember if she made it back to Minneapolis. I don’t remember if an old flame flared up and distracted me. There was no disagreement or breakup. There was just…nothing.
Sometimes home town possibilities are the dream come true, like Ruth and Boaz, but only sometimes.
