Isn't Patriotism Sort of Anti-Christian?

So, with nine days and a few hours left until the 2012 U.S. election, isn't all of this attention to politics a bit of a problem for Christians? Isn't love of country contrary to love of God?

This is our next objection...

Isn't Patriotism Sort of Anti-Christian?

Objection #5: If I show patriotism, I’m not truly loyal to Jesus Christ.

Actually, if you dig deeper, there is a level-headed, balanced approach to living in God's kingdom while living in an earthly kingdom.

The Bible gives support to a genuine kind of patriotism in which citizens love, support, and defend their own country.
  • God established nations!

Speaking in Athens, Paul says that God "made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place" (Acts 17:26).[1]
  • Paul likewise encourages not only obedience but also honor and appreciation for civil rulers when he writes to the Romans, "Let every person be subject to the governing authorities" (Romans 13:1) and says that the ruler is "God's servant for your good" (v. 4).[2]

To be committed to significant Christian influence in our nation is no threat to our faith.
  • To be ultimately loyal to Jesus Christ is no threat to our country.

So go ahead, love your country! Get informed! Get involved! Rise to serve as the citizen-ruler you are!
